    • Course: Data Science

      This course gives an overview of data, ideas and tools that data analysts and data scientists work with. In this course, students will get the basic principles of programming tools such as R, Python, Matlab; reproducible tools such as Github, version control; as well as data cleanup and analysis methods such as data graphics, multivariate statistical techniques. Topics include:

      • Data collection and curation from the web, APIs and public databases
      • Programing functions in data cleaning, analysis, and tool development
      • Data visualization for high-dimensional biomedical data
      • Basic machine learning applications for practical biomedical cases

    • Course: Machine learning

      This course introduces fundamental machine learning theories and applications in the biomedical area. In this course, students will learn to analyze large and complex datasets through a series of hands-on practical case studies. Through this course study, students will be able to apply the machine learning algorithms such as classification, regression and clustering on human disease-related genomic and clinical data. Topics include:

      • Machine learning algorithm implementations by R, python, and matlab scientific computing library
      • Feature selections, high dimentional reductions, missing data imputations, predictors transformations, etc.
      • Binary and multiclass classification and predictions; multivariate, ridge and kernel regressions; k-means, hierarchical, and mixture model clusters etc.
      • Perfomance evaluation, tune parameters with cross validation, predictive models with error metrics, general model selection and optimization techniques
